Refined shea butter is made by pressing selected seeds from the shea tree. This tropical tree of about 15 meters grows wild and is cultivated in Sudan and West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso). The seed is reminiscent of a horse chestnut and has a fat content of 45 to 48%. After pressing, the mass is boiled with water, the fat layer is removed and the product is then gently refined. After cooling, a very pure butter is obtained, very stable to oxidation, slightly grayish to white in color and firm in consistency. Shea butter is used as a base for ointments. In the cosmetic industry in particular, shea butter is used as a lubricating agent for creams and lotions. The unsaponifiable part is composed of up to 75% terpene alcohols. This explains the healing properties of shea butter and its particular skin tolerance. It can be used as a fatty phase in the preparation of a balm, conditioner, shampoo or hair mask.
